❝ A PICTURE-PERFECT FAMILY. . . from the moment seonghwa was brought into the world, he was raised in a comfortable life. his father was the chairman of his own company, lee enterprises. his mother, a beautiful and dutiful housewife raising her firstborn jeongho and her second seonghwa with love and compassion. his brother, only 8 at the time when seonghwa drew his first breaths, confused by the idea of being an older brother but ready to accept the task anyways. they never had to worry about money.he grew up in a large villa spacious enough for the four of them in gangnam. an excitable and lovable toddler, running around the house barefoot being chased by his older brother or going on his own adventures. his father wasn't very affectionate, but it never bothered the child much, for he had his mother. who would scoop his tiny body into her arms, kiss his chubby, red cheeks and tickle his sides until he giggled."seongie, my precious boy." she would coo at him each time. "you're so pretty. you're going to do amazing things for this world, my seongie. just like your father." these were words that he wore with pride. he had always admired his father, a strong, capable leader who hardly let anyone walk over him. seonghwa wanted to be just like him, he wanted to make his father proud to have him as a son.in the public eye, they were a perfect family, smiling and laughing at the cameras when their photos were taken, they would attend business dinners dressed in their finest clothes, people would always whisper about how good his father and mother looked together. how they looked like they were in love.the fantasy didn't last long.

the cracks in the relationship started to show when seonghwa was 7. his father came home less and less, and when he was home he smelled of a perfume seonghwa knew his mother didn't wear. their conversations were tense exchanges, seonghwa could see how his mother struggled not to cry when she would hold him on his lap. it broke his heart to see her like this.his brother didn't seem to care as much as he did, too focused on following in their father's lead whenever he was home. "i need to focus on studying hard, seonghwa. mother and father are fine, parents get into fights all the time." his brother had told him one day when he voiced his concerns. seonghwa tried to believe him, but it was hard having to listen to his mother's muffled sobs in her bedroom or the back-and-forth screams exchanged between the two of them, with seonghwa listening in from his bedroom, large eyes peering through the cracks of his slightly opened door.it only got worse from there. the fighting increased, even in front of the two children. his mother pleading at his father, screaming at him and begging to know why. why was he breaking up the family that they carefully built? her sorrowful screams were met with disinterest and even scorn. she had fulfilled her duties and birthed him not one but two children. her usefulness was completed. she meant nothing to him. and the notion of that broke his mother, who gave up her own life and dreams to be with him.there had been rumors on the internet about his father finding another woman, even photo evidence of one of their outings. seonghwa didn't understand at the time, all he knew was that it hurt his mother, who was getting worse by the day. she ended up getting sick, seonghwa was too young to process what kind of illness it was, and he certainly couldn't process her eventual passing. she wasn't getting better, no matter what care she was given, or maybe she felt like there wasn't anything worth fighting for. no one was sure. all he knew was that it hurt and he cried. he felt like he lost a part of him. and even worse, it seemed like his brother and father didn't care. not even a week after the funeral, his father brought in his mistress, claiming she would be their new mother. he hated it, disgusted by the idea of anyone replacing his mother. he lost respect for his father that day. if this was the type of man he really was, he wanted nothing to do with it.

seonghwa became colder as he got older, his relationship with his father and brother strained. after all, they had went on with their lives as if his mother never existed at all. he kept a few of her things in his room, afraid his father would throw them away. for some reason, despite their differences, his father saw potential in him. maybe it was due to his intellect, or the fact that he looked just like his father, but he started paying attention to him more. taking him with him on trips involving the company, letting him come to the office to watch him work. after all, his father needed an heir to one day inherit the company, seonghwa was the perfect fit.he still didn't know what his father saw in him in comparison to his brother who actually wanted the position and he hated it. he didn't want to take over his father's company, he wanted to find his own path. he felt suffocated. trapped. so, he started to rebel. he wanted to get back at his father for forcing him into this role of the 'perfect child' who did nothing wrong. he'd stay out late going to parties with his friends, he even started smoking to cope with the amount of emotions whirling through his mind. of course, his father would reprimand him, but he never really cared until a certain event happened. seonghwa ended up getting into an underage drinking scandal at one of the parties he had attended. because he was the son of one of the most influential men in south korea, word spread around fast. his father paid plenty of money to cover the scandal up and turned on seonghwa for putting his reputation in jeopardy.blinded with rage, his father beat and whipped seonghwa, making sure he left scars on his body as a reminder of his incompetence and failure. seonghwa was left shaking and bloody on the ground, with the threats that his father had given him still ringing in his ears. "if you ever cross me again, seonghwa. i will make your life a living hell. do not disappoint me."after seonghwa had healed from his injuries, he never stepped out of line again and focused on finishing school. though, his father would resort to beating him if he came home with anything less than a perfect score. he didn't want anything getting out to the public that might risk his reputation again. soon, seonghwa passed high school at the top of his class and his father sent him off to america to go to college. not only to study there, but to also learn english.when he finished his studies and came back to south korea, his father was proud of the obedient man he became and instantly started integrating him into the company, where he became its CEO. now 23, seonghwa has settled nicely into his position, even hiring his closest friend as his assistant. the company was prosperous under his guidance despite his young age. he was intelligent, well-spoken. a stern boss whenever the time called for it and a popular bachelor people either envied or wanted to be with.he was a perfect doll with no cracks anywhere to be seen. the perfect son his father wanted.
